Jury duty in the dark hours of the morn . . . waiting

Photo taken with iPhone
“Jury service is one of the most important civic duties. You do not need any knowledge of the legal system to be a juror. The protection of rights and liberties of litigants in [state and] federal courts is largely achieved through the teamwork of judge and jury.”
…waiting…
I read these heartening words on [...]

Chugach mountains wearing a hat

From almost anywhere in the city where we live, we need only look above the clutter to see the Chugach mountains or on a clear day, we can see the Alaska Range and Denali, Mt. Foraker, and little Mt. Hunter. The reminder that beauty is moments away cheers me and motivates me to head for [...]

The legend of fireweed in Alaska

For the vertical view that includes the Chugach range, please visit Fireweed and the Chugach range
As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed reaches its full splendor – all the way to the top of the spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins.
Fields of fireweed almost have bloomed to the top of their spires. Fireweed, [...]

Forest fires

Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds.
However, upon reflection, other photographic opportunities exist, such as this bench amidst blossoming native fireweed. As [...]

Alaskan anniversary

Tomorrow marks the 15th anniversary of a cruise my mother insisted that we all take. We had a luxurious suite with a wide balcony. Majestic mountains and untouched land seemed to move past slowly, rather than feeling the cruise ship. I would look out the sliding glass doors at 3 a.m. in awe at the [...]

Renewal

Every spring is the only spring — a perpetual astonishment. ~Ellis Peters
Unrelated to spring, I found interesting discussions and beautiful photos at French Landscapes, and some fascinating perspectives at Gary Heller Photography, particularly his self-portrait.

Good grief, I won something

‘Twas just a wee photo challenge – flowers in a vase. And these weren’t even technically in a vase; rather, the tulips (image, far left) grew from bulbs in the vase. Still, apparently the challenge winner won a spot on the RedBubble home page.
That short appearance resulted in more than 2,000 hits or views and [...]

Infinite potential

Isn’t this part of a terrific magazine ad? I took this photo, thinking that the words and image of spiral-bound notebooks and special papers would spur my pursuit of the creative process.
Still waiting. Tap, tap, tap. “Begin!”
Hmm. Nothing.

Redpolls feeding in morning light

Redpoles feeding at the thistle feeder this morning. At 0°F / -17°C, we added sunflower seeds, thistle, peanuts, and a mix of seed to all of the feeders.
(Note the duct tape around the pole at right. If you’ve heard any duct tape jokes about Alaska, they’re all true.)
