As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed reaches its full splendor – all the way to the top of the spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins.

Fields of fireweed almost have bloomed to the top of their spires. Fireweed, genus Epilobium, especially E. angustifolium, has long, terminal, spike-like clusters of pinkish-purple flowers.
